Advertising Done Right, Going Forward
I want to use a web browser, and other social media apps, that let me enforce *my* own rules on advertisers. Who *I* allow to advertise to me, and what they may show/play, and when and where, and under what terms -- if any.
For example, to enforce a rule that *they* must pay *me* for each ad impression. Pre-pay me and/or post-pay. Some specific money amount and currency. To a certain account. Another example, a rule to show any particular ad no more than N times ever. Or ads only in my language(s). Or no ads above a max duration. With some hard cap on ad volume -- possibly zero.
You might appreciate the case for this if you've ever been bitten by the repeatedly and increasingly rude, if not downright creepy -- or even utterly insane! -- behaviors of modern online advertisers.
For example, if you've ever tried to watch an NFL game online (for which you paid them $$$ upfront) and the NFL's app thinks its wise/sane to force you to watch the same *exact* car ad (and IN SPANISH!) approx 1000 times in a row. Not that you are in the market for a car, of course. Or know Spanish. Or somehow failed to remember their ad after the first 500 impressions forced on you.
Advertising is important for the economy. I get it.
Therefore let's do it right, from now on. Finally! We clearly have the technical capabilities. Do we have the will? The world is only as we make it. Only as we, both collectively and individually, allow it to be.
I choose to improve it.
